Wetland Conservation and Hands on Experience


To mark the World Wetlands Day, an interactive workshop titled as “Wetland Conservation and Hands on Experience” was held at Diyasaru Park, Sri Jayewardenepura with the participation of 51 school children and 4 teachers from 3 schools (Samudradevi Balika Vidyalaya, President Girls’ School and President Boys’ School).

The overall goal of this activity was to raise the awareness among school children about values & benefits of wetlands, to promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands in Sri Lanka, providing an opportunity to share ideas and thoughts on wetland conservation. The event was started with a welcome address by Prof. D.D. Wickramasinghe (Head of the Department/Zoology and Environment Sciences, University of Colombo) stating the importance of wetlands emphasizing on importance of conserving wetlands as a part of environmental conservation. It has been an interactive session as well which school students involved in answering the questions and expressing their ideas on conserving wetlands. After the brief introduction students were divided in to 3 groups which they were given hands on experience in the field by resource personals of University of Colombo. Later, students shared their views about significance of wetlands while presenting them through poster presentations, essays, poems and drawings. At the end of the event, the best two posters were appreciated by giving gift packs. The most creative essays and the poems will be selected and be admired by sending gift packs to schools.
