The Regional Drought Risk Management and Mitigation Strategy for South Asia was developed with the support of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). The strategy was officially launched on December 10, 2024.

As the next step, the Global Water Partnership (GWP), in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), ADPC, and guided by UNCCD, plans to develop a regional project aimed at strengthening integrated drought management in South Asia. The project will seek financing from the Adaptation Fund, with WMO as the Implementing Entity. To begin the funding application process, a pre-concept note must be submitted for approval. Once approved, the full project proposal development will proceed.

To support project development, GWP has nominated the Sri Lanka Water Partnership to take initial steps, including:

1) introducing the Regional Drought Risk Management and Mitigation Strategy for South Asia to key stakeholders through a mini launch and discussion

2) assisting the Focal Point in preparing Sri Lanka’s endorsement letter for the pre-concept note, and 3) helping the Focal Point develop the pre-concept note based on discussions and consultations.
